Beware of fly by nighters - Cheaper isn’t often better

It seems these days where all looking for the best quality at the cheapest possible price, but sometimes you’ll get mislead in believing that your getting the best quality for a great price and sometimes you are.

BUT the real truth is, you wont always get the same fantastic deal, whether you realise or not…..

This is because fly by nighters who start up new business try to attract customers by offering cheap deals, usually with good quality products (most new businesses have good intentions). These deals seem to be to good to be true and some of you out there take them on board as a supplier. This relationship could last for a while, even a long time, but like any business, the bottom dollar is everything.

This posses the next question new businesses ask. “How do we increase profits?”

“EASY……” (Their accountant says) There are 3 possible solutions. Just increase your sales ORĀ find cheaper ingredients to replace the good ones OR by very expensive machines to do the work for you.

Increasing sales - this is good until a business can’t cope with the added sales and require more staff, more wages, more insurance, more overhead, more, more, more… SO, something suffers in the end and it’s usually the customer, most new businesses don’t have the financial structure to cope with large expansion and increasing sales usually isĀ uncontrollable. Some businesses can handle the expansion and realise the only way to cope with the influx of customers is by structuring prices to cover all cost, THUS goodbye to the great deals.

Finding cheaper ingredients - Unfortunately this is the way most new business go, sad but true, because it’s the easiest way to increase profits while maintaining the current price structure. This problem is then passed onto you, then your customers will realise that the quality of products have changed and either let you know about it, or most likely stop buying from you altogether. In the end the only one caught out is you.

Buying very expensive machinery - is the best way to increase production, consistent quality and maintain a good profit without increasing pricing. This though is difficult for most new businesses because they are usually already heavily mortgaged and cannot afford to make such a large purchase. To afford this sort of purchase, new businesses need lots of profit…. Catch 22 if you ask me.

To give you my unbiased opinion, look for a supplier with a good range, a good track record, a HACCP accredited supplier (this is for peace of mind, because a HACCP accredited supplier mean they can track their products back to the raw ingredient, if there is a problem) and good old fashioned service.

We at Epicurean Kitchen fit all of the above criteria, we have a good 23 year history, we are now located in our HACCP accredited factory in Marrickville, we deliver all over NSW and we are a family owned business, so you can talk to us direct about your cake, sandwich or doughnut needs.
